I Could Turn You Inside-Out

July 14, 2008 07:31 AM

In the mid-1980's, there was no cooler place for a band to call home than Athens, GA. Of course, everybody knows that R.E.M. was leading the pack here, but there were a lot of other marginally-successful or locally-famous bands who were all really great in their own right. The Classic City's scene was documented in a film called Athens, GA. Inside/Out and this film is available for this week at Pitchfork.tv. R.E.M. performs two songs, "Swan Swan H" and "Dream (All I Have To Do)", in a chapel that they revisited last year for recording Accelerate. Back then, they were just four Southern guys with bad haircuts and there was no singer in the music biz who was more shy. I haven't seen this film in a few years (I bought the DVD when I was in Athens), but I remember being very impressed by a pair of musicians called the Flat Duo Jets. For anyone with any interest in where "alternative" music came from or where college rock started, this is essential viewing.

Wall-E

Pixar pulled off another great movie with this one. About ten minutes into it, I had to remind myself that what I was seeing was completely animated and not filmed. This is definitely one to see in the theater, although the the second half really might make you wonder about the large tub of popcorn and ocean-sized drink you're enjoying out of easily-disposable containers.

Dear Somerville

Who steals plants from in front of someone's house? I don't mean plants in a pot - these were hens & chicks freshly planted in the ground. Someone dug up two of the plants and took them. I wish I could be more eloquent, but you sir or madam, are an asshole.

Missing Something

"There's something I'm confused about. You got the second iPhone, but why is it called the iPhone 3G. What happened to the second G?"
-my wife this morning. She said that she's been thinking about that all week. I guess it's nice not to bother yourself with the intricacies of cell network naming conventions.

Rabbits Rabbits Rabbits

July 1, 2008 07:52 AM

I hope you remembered to say your rabbits first thing this morning. I've been doing this for good luck for as long as I can remember. Even after I moved out of my parents' house and didn't have my Dad to remind me on the first of every month, I've kept it up. It's not always the first thing I say each month, but I usually get to it sometime early in the morning, so I think that's good enough. I'm pretty sure that I haven't missed a month since I was 8 years old. That's a lot of rabbits, and apparently I've been throwing an extra one in there for even better luck. The link above says that the phrase is just a measly two rabbits. Good luck with that.
