How a music store should be

September 22, 2007 8:45 AM

Forget the Beatles. I think that a lot of people would be pretty excited to finally see Radiohead's music available on the iTunes store. Okay, maybe not as many as would want to hear the Fab Four, especially if they're remastered, but it's still a pretty big hole in the store's offerings. This week, finally, you can legally download high-quality digital copies of Radiohead songs. It's just not from iTunes. They have made much of their catalog available through 7digital.com, a UK store. All of the albums and EPs (except for the forgettable Pop is Dead) are available in 320 kbps MP3, with no DRM. This means that they're very high quality files and there's no restrictions on where you can play them or what you can do with them.

The catalog is pretty impressive. Almost all of their singles and b-sides are represented. I'd definitely be trying this out if I hadn't spent the better part of my late teenage years scouring record shop bins for both the US and import versions of these. I just don't think that they're selling anything that I haven't already paid too much to get. Not that these are too expensive. They're £6.99 for the albums or £1.79 for most of the singles. They're only available as the full package, meaning that you can't pick and choose songs, but that's really the only way that you should be listening to Radiohead anyhow.

One caution before you go on your shopping spree: avoid the "Street Spirit" single at all costs. Yes, the single is, in my opinion, the best song EVER, but the b-side "Molasses" just might be the worst. If you need "Street Spirit," just buy The Bends. You've been warned.

Update: sorry - feel free to buy the "Street Spirit" single that has "Talk Show Host" (the Romeo & Juliet song) and "Bishop's Robes" on the b-side. Those are both incredible songs. Just avoid the one with the cat on the cover.
