At least he didn't try to play pianner.
I had the last-minute opportunity last night to sit at the front-of-house mixer for Morrissey's show at the Bank of America Pavilion. After Lloyd, the guitar tech, sat us there, the sound and lights guys were great just letting us sit around, eat our pizza, and enjoy the show. The band showed up promptly at 8:45 and ripped into "The Queen is Dead," at which point I turned to my friend to say that I would be happy if the show stopped now. Little did I know that only a song or two after he apologized for having a rough voice he'd leave the stage and not come back. At first we weren't quite sure if this was a Moz tantrum, but the sound engineers assured us that his voice really was off and cracking.
Of course, the crowd wasn't too happy with this situation, even when we were told that our tickets would be honored for a potentially-rescheduled future show. That puts me in both the best and worst situation relative to everybody else there. I didn't pay to get in, so I didn't get screwed out of $50 for a 7-song set, but I also don't have a ticket to redeem if he comes back. Oh well.
In the end, it was actually fun to see a classic Morrissey break-down (even if it was justified) and watch the crowd's reaction. Again, I can probably just call it "fun" because I didn't have a bunch of money invested in a ticket for the night. Watching the sound guys work up-close was interesting. There was a Powerbook on top of the main mixer with notes and highlights for each song (by the way, the next song to played when Moz left was "Girlfriend in a Coma"). These notes included things like "Mike MOOG solo at 3:30." I imagine if I could've gotten a closer peek, I could've seen the full setlist on the screen, but what he played was already very similar to other sets on the tour.
So, if you were there, remember to check the LiveNation website for updates, and hopefully his voice will heal soon and he'll get back on tour. Check sites like Information Leafblower for more good reviews of the shows coming up.
