Rumors of Pulp reissues have been around for a couple of months now, with no explanation of what will actually be on them. Well, today Pitchfork has what they claim to be the tracklists for the double disc reissues of His 'n' Hers, Different Class, and
Different Class is probably the album that I'd elevate above all others as my Favorite Album Ever. If it ends up in my CD player, it almost certainly won't be taken out for a week or two; I just can't stop listening. Once upon a time I found a great 1 hour BBC piece about the making of this album. Unfortunately, it's been lost to the internet gnomes. In the piece, Jarvis claimed that they had all this music written, but he was getting very nervous about not having any words to go with it. He went away for a weekend and ended up writing all of the album's lyrics in 48 hours.
I have always imagined that a great book or thesis would be to compare the England of Different Class to that of Parklife. Which one better describes Britain in the mid-nineties? Discuss, explain. I'd read it.
Jarvis has also written some songs for Charlotte Gainsbourg's new album. This record will include music from Air, and Neil Hannon (Divine Comedy) also contributes some surely-over-the-top lyrics.
Now I'm going to have to go home and listen to some Pulp. Too bad for the other CDs that I've recently bought.
