As of today, I have to live the next year with the specter of an early rock 'n' roll death hanging over my head. If I'm still here at this time next year, I'll be happy to know that I've outlived Kurt, Janis, Jimi, and Jim. Of course, first I'd have to get in a band, take up some hard drugs, stay out much later every night, and become just generally much more self-destructive. Maybe I'll just try for the first item in the list. That sounds more enjoyable. I do know where the DEA keeps their stash in Boston, though...

The show got off to a rough start with two broken microphones, an acoustic guitar that just refused to be amplified, and a couple of broken strings. Fortunately, the techs helped out pretty quickly with the first two, and Ben Ottewell and Ian Ball were able to improvise their solos to make up for the missing strings. After the first 3-4 songs, it seemed to go much more smoothly. Someone was up front with a pretty good recording setup - a good condenser mic on a stand a few feet above the crowd, right in front of the stage. He told me that he's going to post it on archive.org, so keep an eye out for it there.

I'm a day late, but happy birthday, Sir Paul. I'm sure that the media had a lot of fun with him finally turning 64 yesterday. I hope that someone was nice enough to still send him some birthday greetings or a bottle of wine. He's had a rough month.

Last night I had a very strange dream. I was watching Jeopardy! and someone made a comment about how much Alex Trebek looks like American Idol winner and People's Most Eligible Bachelor Taylor Hicks. Alex went on to slacken his tie, unbutton his top few buttons, and as the Jeopardy! house band revved things up he went into some rockabilly number. I never watch American Idol and I don't really think that the two look alike, except for maybe the color of their hair. This is why I think dreams are fun.
I never did post anything about "Radiohead, pt 2" but I'm sure that you found out about the show if you wanted to do so. Later this week I'll put up some of my pictures of Eels at the Somerville Theater. Tomorrow night is Gomez at the Paradise. I know that I should pay attention to more of their new stuff, but I just want to hear "Whippin Piccadilly" again.

I just returned from dinner at Skipjack's Fish Emporium in Copley Square. The ginger-crusted calamari was wonderful, as was the high-school-buddy company. As we were finishing our key lime pie, an older guy who looked familiar in the "I'm sure he looks like someone famous" way came in. I quickly placed him as the guy who looks a lot like Ben Stein, and joked to my friend that Ben had just walked in. Then I saw that he was wearing a suit with sneakers and my brain went to the Useless Memories Storage section to recall that this was the outfit Ben wore every day on my favorite missed game show, Win Ben Stein's Money. Another glance (maybe a stare) confirmed that it was actually Ben there to get some dinner. I wasn't able to overhear anything that he said to the waiters while I was trying to get audio confirmation of my celebrity sighting, but I'm sure it was him. I just wish I could've heard him order.

I spent last night at the Bank of America Pavilion seeing my 10th Radiohead show. I won't repeat the setlist cuz you can find that at places like here and here. Of the nine new songs that they played, I think that "Videotape" and "Bodysnatchers" are my current favorites, although I was disappointed that I didn't really hear something that I'd consider to be a future live classic in the vein of "Just," "2+2=5," or "Everything In It's Right Place." From my limited listening of the new stuff, I'd rate them on par with songs like "In Limbo," "Nice Dream," and "Punchup at a Wedding"; they're great songs, but you kinda forget about them once the next album is out. Still, I'm curious to see what they're going to do with them when they get back to the studio. Another of the "new" songs is called "Nude" and they've actually been kicking that one around since the OK Computer tour. I've always hoped that they'd bring that one back since I heard them play it at Radio City Music Hall on the next-to-last show of that tour. They've slowed it down a bit and mellowed it some, but it hasn't changed that radically.
I don't remember if Jonny had given up the arm brace on the last tour, but it certainly wasn't on last night. I know that he's supposed to be a t-shirt connoisseur and last night's was the strangest I've seen. The left sleeve (fret hand) was long-sleeved, and the right (picking hand) was short sleeved. I guess he did that so he wouldn't shred the shirt while he ripped through the songs. While he was the same crazy-flailing guy on songs like "My Iron Lung," he definitely toned down his picking motions for "Airbag."
My seat was about 2/3 of the way back, so I don't think I got many good pictures (I haven't looked at them yet). If any of them turn out well, I'll post then. I was sitting right beside the sound board, though, so I at least got a couple good pictures of the desk and the guys there. Also, I'll have to listen more closely tonight, but I think that my first try at recording turned out sort of miserably. I think I can blame it on my mic clipping, so I guess I'll return that one and look for something decent. Oh well, it was worth a try. Fortunately, I know someone who will be recording tonight's show from the 2nd row. Lucky, lucky guy.
Oh, and Ed's still tall.
In less-important yesterday news, here's my playlist and archived audio from yesterday's British Accents show.
