Back in Mac

I got my new MacBook Pro yesterday. It's fast, thin, Front Row works great, and it was super-easy to move all of the data from my old Powerbook hard drive to the new machine. Even the packaging had a good "wow" factor. My first impressions on the differences between this and the Powerbook:

In less-thrilling news, Apple announced the iPod Hi-Fi this afternoon. It's expensive, there's nothing really groundbreaking about it, and it's not portable with that iPod hanging off the top of it. I guess I was just expecting to see something with some crazy new features. Two strikes for Apple with this and the new silly-expensive leather cases today. At least the new Intel Mac Minis look good, even if I was hoping for some new whizz-bang features. I'll buy one of those as soon as they can put a HDTV tuner in there and I can use it as my PVR.

Update: I think the Hi-Fi makes a lot more sense if it's not thought of as a portable device first, but rather a home iPod system. It seems that's how Apple is marketing it.

My man. I could not agree more about the "Hi-Fi." Totally boring. I was also under-impressed with the design as well. The MacBook Pro does look interesting. Does it have a light on the keyboard? Cool.

You are correct about the leather cases. If I see someone with a leather case and an iPod I will definitely, without question, mug them.

I bet Ken buys one of those D-Cell-sinks. Just to freak us out.

The MacBook Pro does have the backlit keyboard, like the Powerbook. It still uses the light sensors under the speaker grilles to adjust the screen and keyboard backlighting.

Could we get comment from Ken on that HiFI thing?

I don't really have much constructive to say about that thing. It is a massive piece of marketing. Apple has been missing out on the market in these i-pod "stereos" and wants a piece of the action. I'm sure they put almost no work into actually designing a good piece of audio equipment. All those claims on their website, especially about room-filling sound, just make me laugh and cry at the same time. I don't own an i-pod because I have no need to listen to music portably, and I still buy CDs because I am old and want a physical piece of something for $15. For the record, I own a turntable and I do not own a cell phone.

I just read the ad copy on that i-pod thing. They claim that it is sealed air tight, yet the enclosure has two ports. A port is just a fancy name for a hole. If it has a hole it is not sealed air tight. That is not rocket science. If Apple is claiming that they invented this folded tube inside the box, as Bose often tries to do, tell them that the folded horn was invented in, I think, the 1930s and is very difficult to get right.

The following should go on Ken's gravestone, "For the RECORD, I own a turntable and I do not own a cell phone." Classic...
