This should be the only time that I write about work on Drive Blind. It's just a bad idea. Maybe you're unhappy at your job and you think that you're website is totally anonymous, but I've seen plenty of examples where that isn't the case. So, just don't do it.
Plus, I spend all day at work, so I don't feel like I need to write about it in my free time, too.
You can read a first-hand experience at Dooce of a woman who was fired for her blog a few years ago. She even got the verb named for her ("Dooced").
One more thing that you'll never see here, save for this entry - the word "blogosphere." Ugh. I think it just sounds stupid, and I don't feel like being more eloquent than that.

I want my first substantial entry on Drive Blind to talk a bit about what I want this website to be. This one is for me. The posts might end up being all over the place in the future, but I'm going to try to convince myself here that there's going to be something of a theme. Simply, my two (completely unrelated) themes are going to be my love for music, and a forum for me to vent about things that just might piss me off.
Anyone who knows me learns pretty quickly that I'm that guy whose CD changer is full of bands that most people haven't heard of, as much as I encourage them to "Give this one a listen; I know you'll love it." Really, though, I don't consider my tastes to be too eclectic. I'm certainly more likely to buy an R.E.M. album or an Elvis Costello reissue than a compliation of a small German electronic label (check out the Ellen Allien stuff, you'll like it).
Cheerio to you who recognize that the name of this site is taken from Ride's best song. I think that link is more proof that there's nothing wrong with having a Ride-influenced .net URL because the .com has been scooped up and is being used for some useless links page. Chrome Waves is the other example that I know of, not that I consider this site in that league quite yet.
Which brings me to theme #2. So, my first complaint is domain squatters. My first domain name choice was hoopyfrood.com, but I was informed by the squatter that the "current market value" of that domain was $1200. Okay, so maybe the movie has bumped the price up a bit, but market value is what someone is willing to pay for the domain. I'm willing to bet that at this time next year, they still won't have found a taker at that price.
I've realized lately that I like to complain, but that's not exactly an especially endearing character trait. So, with Drive Blind, I can bitch and moan all I want and people only have to listen to me if they want to check out my site.
So, there's me. I hope to clean up the site a bit over the next couple of weeks (months?). The web design is a fun project and you can see some links on the left to pages that will probably show up soon. Posting might be sporadic at first until I get into a groove. Stay tuned, though, and thanks for making it this far.

As of today, May 16, 2005, I declare this website open for blogging. I hope that my next post will explain a bit more about what I hope that this blog will be. I have to write that first, though, so please be patient. Enjoy your reading.
